As an artist, there are times when a painting isn't just a project—it becomes a deeply personal reflection of faith, purpose, and the messages we want to leave behind for the next generation. When I sat down in my studio to paint "love-cross", I wanted to move away from traditional, somber depictions of the crucifixion and create something that speaks directly to the heart.

For me, art has always been a way to mentor, inspire, and spark meaningful conversations. With this piece, I wanted to challenge how we look at sacrifice and reframe it through the lens of ultimate devotion.

The Choices Behind the Canvas

  • Why a Green Cross? Choosing a vibrant, neon-green instead of traditional wood tones was a deliberate choice to disrupt expectations. The cross is historically a symbol of suffering, but green represents life, renewal, and growth bursting through the darkness. It’s a reminder that even out of our deepest pain, something beautiful can bloom.

  • The Golden Backdrop: If you look closely behind the figure of Christ, the word "Love" is written across the dark background in fluid, golden calligraphy. I wanted to visually declare that the entire foundation of this moment wasn't defeat, but a profound, unshakeable love.

  • Modern Meets Traditional: The sharp, golden arrows and geometric patterns framing the canvas bring a stylized, modern contrast to the organic, raw brushstrokes of the figure. It bridges the gap between a timeless narrative and a contemporary visual language.

  • The Stark Contrast: By painting a solid, deep black background, I stripped away all worldly distractions. It forces us to quiet the noise of everyday life and stand face-to-face with the raw emotion of the scene.

A Message for the Journey

I often think about the power of visuals to heal, uplift, and give a voice to things we can't quite find the words for. Whether I am teaching, writing, or working late into the night under my studio light, my goal is always to remind those who look at my work that they are seen, valued, and covered by a love that never gives up.

"love-cross" is my visual meditation on hope. It is a reminder that no matter how dark the canvas of our life might seem, there is a vibrant, life-giving grace rewriting the story.
