Artistic Concept & Social Commentary

At first glance, the painting presents a familiar, leisurely scene—a billiard table. However, Joseph R. Duyan cleverly replaces the traditional triangular rack with a heart-shaped rack. This substitution serves as a powerful metaphor for how we organize and view our society.

1. Connection to Social Issues

In a game of pool, the objective is often individualistic: to pocket the balls and win against an opponent. This mirrors societal hyper-competition, individualism, and fragmentation.

  • Social Stratification: The billiard balls are scattered with different numbers and colors, much like people divided by socio-economic class, political views, and backgrounds.

  • The Cue Ball as an External Force: The isolated white cue ball poised at the top represents external societal forces—economic crises, political shifts, or systemic pressures—ready to "break" the existing structure and scatter individuals into their own isolated corners (the black pockets).

2. Connection to Values Formation

The heart rack is the ultimate symbol of Values Formation, acting as a countermeasure to social decay.

  • Unity and Inclusivity: The heart holds all the diverse, numbered balls tightly together. It suggests that despite our differences (colors and numbers), empathy and love are the ultimate frameworks that keep society from fracturing.

  • Intentionality (The First Move): In values formation, the "first break" matters. If the cue ball strikes with malice or greed, chaos ensues. If the game of life is played with fairness, sportsmanship, and respect, the outcome changes entirely. The painting asks the viewer: When life "breaks" your current state, will your core values keep you grounded, or will you fall into the void (the pockets)?
